The unemployment rate in Luxembourg remains stable at 5.6%, but the number of jobseekers has risen sharply over the past year, with job vacancies also increasing.
On Tuesday, the National Employment Agency (ADEM) released the latest employment figures for Luxembourg. The unemployment rate, calculated by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), stood at 5.6% at the end of April, the same as at the end of March.
At the end of April, there were 17,596 jobseekers in the country, nearly unchanged from the 17,654 recorded at the end of March.
However, the number of resident jobseekers registered with ADEM has increased by 2,266, or 14.8%, compared to April 2023. Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals receiving full unemployment benefits rose by 2,134 people, a 26.5% increase over one year.
The rise in jobseekers is seen across all job vacancy durations, according to ADEM. Particularly, the most significant increases are among highly qualified jobseekers with higher education qualifications and those under the age of 30.
The occupations most affected include construction, finance and property, industry, accounting, and IT.
New registrations at ADEM have also increased, with 2,536 residents registering in April, an increase of 398 people. Among these new registrations, 72 were beneficiaries of temporary protection, i.e., refugees from Ukraine.
Employers reported 3,366 job vacancies to ADEM in April, marking a 13.3% increase compared to April 2023. Consequently, the total number of vacancies at the end of the month was 7,996. Despite this increase, there has been a year-on-year decrease in the total number of vacancies, which has fallen by 19.5%.
