On Tuesday, the Chamber of Deputies published 22 new petitions open for signatures until 17 June, inclusive. Petitions garnering a minimum of 4,500 signatures by June's deadline will prompt public debates in the Chamber of Deputies.
Among the notable petitions is one advocating for the constitutional recognition of the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy and access to contraception. The petitioner highlights the global importance of safeguarding this "fundamental right," especially in the face of challenges posed "by the rise of the far right."
Another petition proposes the designation of Good Friday as an additional public holiday, while a separate request calls for the prohibition of slot machines in bars and public spaces.
Several petitions address healthcare-related issues, including the full reimbursement of children's medicines by the National Health Fund (CNS), and the removal of limitations on patient transport covered by the CNS for taxi services. Additionally, demands for extended and guaranteed visiting rights for hospital patients, an end to doctor refusal of new patients, and the elimination of restrictions on sick pay entitlements for serious illnesses are also on the table.
Family-related petitions seek various new reforms, such as ensuring a child's place at drop-in centres during a mother's maternity leave, granting exemptions from compulsory schooling for family-related reasons, and increasing family leave entitlements for single-parent households. Other proposals include granting married individuals the right to choose their customary name and advocating for equitable division of tax and family allowances in divorce cases involving shared custody.
One petition calls for the establishment of a legal framework permitting the use of surrogate mothers, particularly for couples facing challenges in conceiving naturally due to medical, health, or personal circumstances, including same-sex couples.
