The fire, which engulfed the barn on Sunday afternoon, was made all the more tragic by the discovery of a lifeless body amidst the rubble. Mayor Lou Linster of Leudelange informed that work continues at the site on Tuesday, likely extending into the evening, to ensure safety and clear debris.

Efforts to aid the firefighting operation included the removal of straw from the barn, enabling better access for fire crews. Subsequently, what remains of the structure will be demolished by a construction company to mitigate risks of collapse onto nearby Rue Eich or the grounds of the cultural centre.

Following the incident, the local authorities issued a warning to residents on Monday evening regarding the detection of asbestos. Mayor Linster confirmed that the barn’s roof was constructed with Eternit sheets, releasing asbestos particles during the fire. The combustion of these materials also led to the reported small explosions. Eternit sheets were also stored at the site of the fire.

The municipality is awaiting results from a dust survey conducted by the police to assess the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air, with public alerts to be adjusted accordingly.

In the meantime, local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed and minimise outdoor activity, particularly in the vicinity of the disaster site, as a preventive measure. Despite rapid dispersion of asbestos in open air, the municipality prioritises caution due to uncertainties surrounding exposure levels.

The presence of asbestos is also posing challenges when it comes to removing the debris. Cleaning efforts, especially concerning asbestos debris near the church, are being managed by a specialist company to ensure public safety.
