The closure comes as a precautionary measure due to safety concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the steel cables supporting the bridge.

The decision to close the bridge was announced by the municipality of Diekirch via Facebook, citing the need for immediate attention to address the structural issues. Upon enquiry, the Bridges and Roads Authority confirmed the deterioration of the steel cables and highlighted additional renovation work required for the bridge’s upkeep.

To mitigate the inconvenience caused by the closure, plans are underway to construct a temporary bridge adjacent to the existing one. This interim solution is expected to be implemented promptly.

However, the comprehensive renovation of the main bridge is anticipated to span approximately a year. Details regarding the start of the renovation remain pending, but the Bridges and Roads Authority has already confirmed that it will not occur in 2024.

Meanwhile, preparations include the construction of a support structure beneath the bridge to facilitate the renovation process.

A support structure had already been installed near the town hall’s side bank in the summer of 2023. While this project incurred a cost of €60,000, the total expenses for the upcoming bridge renovation have yet to be determined.

Constructed in 1975, the bridge spans 70 metres and is made of steel and reinforced concrete.
