Minister of the EconomyLuxembourg will not support nuclear energy

RTL Today
Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy, and Tourism, Lex Delles, addressed several key issues during an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio on Saturday afternoon.

Addressing the Google Data Centre project, Minister Delles assured that discussions with the US tech giant have resumed and are progressing intensively since the start of the year. Expressing confidence in the project’s future, he noted ongoing “technical” meetings, which he does not personally attend.

Delles emphasised Luxembourg’s commitment to remaining an industrial hub, citing plans to assess activity zones to optimise development opportunities.

The new government’s agenda prioritises administrative simplification, with task forces currently streamlining processes to reduce bureaucratic redundancies, i.e., eliminate the need for people to submit the same documents repeatedly.

Responding to accusations of the government acting as a stooge of the employers, Minister Delles underscored the symbiotic relationship between a strong economy, job creation, and social security funding. He stressed the importance of growth all while affirming the government’s commitment to prioritising the energy transition.

Lex Delles clarified emphatically that Luxembourg will not support nuclear energy. Recent statements by Prime Minister Luc Frieden had “surprised” him at first, Delles stated. However, the head of government later made it clear that they were made in a European context and that he had not meant it in the way it came across, Delles noted.

Regarding the energy price cap, Delles announced plans to address the anticipated sharp rise in electricity and gas prices by 2025. He revealed that efforts are underway to develop a solution aimed at mitigating the impact, with the gradual phasing out of the price cap being considered.

In the realm of tourism, Minister Delles outlined his vision to bolster the hotel industry’s bed capacity.

Touching on the contentious issue of the begging ban, Delles indicated the Democratic Party’s (DP) support for Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer on the matter.

Addressing perceptions of the DP’s role within the coalition, Delles emphasised a collaborative approach, asserting that both parties would operate as equals within the government framework. Delles added that working with Prime Minister Luc Frieden would be “quite pleasant.”

Responding to speculation about his future role as the national DP lead candidate, Delles dismissed the notion, stating that it was not a consideration at present.
