Finance Minister Gilles Roth states that the pace of hiring within the government should slow down despite around 1,800 unfilled posts last year.
Roth was recently asked by MPs of the Democratic Party if more government employees will be needed, and if so, in what sectors? He confirmed on Monday that fewer staff will be hired in the future than up until now.
"This is partly due to the fact that the State does not always find the people it is looking for," stated Roth in his written response. "In the autumn of 2023, there were still around 1,800 posts unfilled at the State."
Most of the new positions are planned for the police and in the education department. As far as operating costs are concerned, they have increased by an average of 10% per year between 2019-2023 with 7.3% expected in 2024.
Pensions and allowances of public servants were in the news in recent weeks.
It was reported that the Civil Service Pension Fund disbursed a staggering €1.2 billion to cover the pensions of civil servants in 2023, marking a fivefold increase since 1999.
Furthermore, civil servants are granted a special family allowance of nearly 650 euros a month, in addition to standard state allowances. A petition calls for this allowance to be extended to all parents.
