Jeannot Ries describes the prevailing sentiment in Ukraine on 24 February 2024 as one of weariness. Reflecting on their observations, he notes the sombre atmosphere, exemplified by a visit to a cemetery where fresh flowers were being sold in remembrance of war victims. This sobering reality underscores the ongoing toll of the conflict and the uncertainty surrounding its resolution, according to Ries.
Despite the backdrop of conflict, everyday life in Kyiv appears surprisingly normal, Ries reports. The bustling streets resemble “those of any European capital, with morning traffic jams and open shops.”
However, the war’s impact becomes palpable after dark, with dwindling social activities as many Ukrainians express a reluctance to venture out, citing a waning desire over time.
As recently as December, a survey was conducted in which only a minority of Ukrainians declared their willingness to give up Ukrainian territory in exchange for some kind of peace with Russia.
Local assessments suggest intensified pressure from the Russian army at the frontlines, met with determined resistance from Ukrainian forces who continue to display “enormous commitment” in the face of adversity, Ries said.
