Recent remarks made by Simone Beissel, a member of Luxembourg City's municipal executive board and MP of the Democratic Party (DP), during an episode of Apart TV's "Riicht eraus" programme, have sparked controversy and drawn criticism.
In a press release, the local section of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) in Luxembourg City notably described her comments as "racist" and accused Beissel of spreading "disinformation."
During the programme, Beissel made statements about beggars that incited strong reactions, particularly her references to the Sinti and Roma communities in relation to begging. She also stated that she does not give money to beggars, but "feeds" them instead.
Following the backlash, Beissel issued an apology via social media on Tuesday afternoon, acknowledging that her comments were "inappropriate in both tone and choice of words."
"The dignity of every person, respectful treatment of everyone, and commitment to the most vulnerable in our society have always been fundamental values that I fully share," she stated on Facebook.
Beissel is scheduled to appear as a guest on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning at 8.10am.
