Vianden's open-air swimming pool will welcome visitors once again this summer, albeit with limited capacity.
For students seeking summer employment opportunities, the reopening of the Vianden swimming pool presents a potential job prospect. The Vianden local authority is currently seeking individuals aged 18 or older with a "Class 2" swimming certificate.
The pool closed its doors in 2019 following an incident that, while resolved without serious consequences, prompted an inspection by the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM). Subsequent investigations uncovered several regulatory breaches. The local authority swiftly engaged a qualified swimming instructor to develop a safety protocol, although this collaboration was short-lived.
The previous municipal leadership had insisted on the pool remaining closed until undergoing comprehensive renovations, initially estimated at €18 million in 2023. However, during the 2023 municipal election campaign, now-Mayor François Weyrich's team pledged to provisionally reopen the pool from 2024. Confirming the plan to our colleagues from RTL.lu, Mayor Weyrich stated that all administrative procedures have been finalised, with works slated to start in March. Temporary changing rooms and sanitary facilities will be provided in containers, albeit smaller than initially envisioned.
Upon reopening on 15 July, only the 25-meter pool will be accessible, with a capped capacity of 500 visitors. Previously accommodating over 1,500 patrons, the reduced capacity necessitates the implementation of an online booking system to avoid visitors travelling to Vianden without being able to access the area. The pool will remain operational as long as weather conditions permit, typically through September.
Further project details will be presented to the municipal council in the upcoming week.
