The Alzette River near Schifflange has been struck by pollution for the third time within a month.
Initial assessments suggest that hydrocarbons, potentially stemming from heating fuel or diesel, may be responsible for the contamination in the river.
The extent of the water pollution is visibly evident near the "Am Brill" nature reserve and the "Pudel" locality, observable even to the naked eye. To mitigate the pollution, the fire brigade is currently setting up a dam.
Identifying the source of the pollution remains a top priority, a task entrusted to the Water Management Authority. "Am Brill" is a protected nature reserve that is home to numerous birds and other animals.
In response to the recurring incidents, local authorities from Schifflange and Esch-sur-Alzette will convene with the Water Management Authority's directorate to explore lasting solutions. Discussions will centre on the feasibility of installing a dam independently in the future, drawing inspiration from existing initiatives such as the one in Bissen.
