The current Director of Luxembourg for Finance (LFF), Nicolas Mackel, is reportedly set to become the new Ambassador to the EU in Brussels.

This information from the Luxemburger Wort has been confirmed by RTL through a well-informed source. Nicolas Mackel is expected to succeed Sylvie Lucas as the head of the Permanent Representation in Brussels next summer, once the personnel carousel starts turning.

Nicolas Mackel was appointed CEO of LFF by then-Finance Minister Luc Frieden in 2013, replacing Fernand Grulms. Luc Frieden stated at the time that he wanted the promotion agency for the financial sector to be closer to the Ministry - especially as it was founded in collaboration with the private sector. Since then, Nicolas Mackel has diligently represented the interests of the Luxembourg financial center and promoted it extensively. Among other things, he has done so through participation in conferences abroad and as an interviewee in foreign press.

Nicolas Mackel has also been a diplomat. Before becoming CEO of LFF, he served as Consul General in Shanghai and worked at the Embassy in Washington. Prior to that, he had already spent five years at the Permanent Representation in Brussels. The trained lawyer, specializing in European law, worked at the European Court of Justice before embarking on his diplomatic career.
