Yuriko Backes, Minister for Gender Equality and Diversity, held her first meeting with the committee, on prostitution in Luxembourg.
The committee, established by Grand-Ducal regulation in March 2023, was founded to take over from the informal "Platform Prostitution", which was launched in 2012 to develop a national action plan for prostitution in Luxembourg.
Chaired by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Diversity (MEGA), the committee brings together representatives from the Ministries of Gender Equality and Diversity, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the public prosecutor's office, the Grand Ducal police, the DROPIN and HIV-consultation services of the Luxembourg Red Cross, Luxembourg City's Social Affairs Department and civil society.
Although the CSV-DP coalition agreement did not reference sex workers in its equal opportunities chapter, the committee's mission is to monitor sex work in Luxembourg and analyse its evolution with a view to issuing concrete recommendations for the government in the form of annual reports.
Minister Yuriko Backes said she was delighted to participate in the committee's first meeting on 9 February, stating that "historically, prostitution and society's attitude towards it is a classic topic for equality politics. The committee represents a unique platform to bring together people who encounter prostitution in their daily work, and to discuss various aspects of the topic such as legal framework, psychosocial services, health and prevention issues as well as safety and security."
