As freezing rain and snow buffeted the Grand Duchy this week, RTL made enquiries as to the country's grit reserves, as many shops sold out of road salt.

RTL contacted a number of stores across the country, all of whom said they had sold out of bags of gritting salt. While salt may be available at selected shops, it is best to ask staff in advance to check stock levels. Some supermarkets said they were expecting additional stock soon.

The National Road Administration (Ponts et Chaussées), which is responsible for clearing and gritting the country's road surfaces, said they had plenty of grit in their reserves, with around 5,400 tons of salt split across their depots. This should be sufficient to cover the administration's needs for some time, but if they should suddenly run out, a spokesperson confirmed they would have plenty in reserve.

When asked about the rumour that the Roads Administration had bought up all the country's available stock of salt, the director responded with a smiling "no".
