An alarming new study suggests that more than one in ten Luxembourg residents (12%) have been the victim of a burglary or attempted burglary in the last five years.

The research was carried out by the national statistics institute, STATEC.

In more than half of the cases, attempted burglars came away with nothing.

The Statec study also reveals that almost two thirds of burglaries targeting homes concerned detached houses (48%) and terraced houses (16%). Apartments and studios account for 36% of burglaries.

Most often, burglars attempted to break into the home itself (66%), but adjoining areas such as cellars and parking lots were also targeted (25%).

No surprises as to which sections of society are most targeted by burglars. Statec indicates that the prevalence rate of burglaries increases with household income, rising from 5% to 9% for households earning at least 5,000 euros per month.

Finally, the survey showed that the cantons of Luxembourg (10%) and Remich (8%) have been targeted most heavily. The northern regions are, for their part, less affected. Details can be viewed below.
