Water levels on Luxembourg's rivers are expected to remain high until at least Thursday, the director of the Water Management Authority has said.

Jean-Paul Lickes said forecasts for heavy rainfall on Tuesday had been accurate.

The Upper Alzette saw slightly lower flood levels than the Lower Alzette. However, the water levels all the way to Mersch will remain high all day on Wednesday.

On the Sûre, less flooding was reported. But there, too, it can be assumed that the water level will remain relatively high over the next few hours.

The Moselle will rise in the coming days. However, major flooding is not expected there either.

At the moment, there is no talk of an official warning, but people should remain vigilant, according to Lickes.

A maximum is expected on Wednesday night, with a level in Stadtbredimus between 5.50 metres and 6 metres.

Additionally, MeteoLux is expecting heavy rainfall in the Guttland region of the country on Wednesday afternoon with wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour.

The flood warning remains in place until midnight.
