The Minister of Labour Georges Mischo responded to a parliamentary question from LSAP MPs Dan Biancalana and Yves Cruchten.

He explained that as of the end of October, people registered with ADEM for at least twelve months make up 37 percent of all unemployed people in the country. In total, there are 6,288 people on long-term unemployment in Luxembourg - down from 8,262 in 2020 and 7,553 in 2021, although a slight increase from 6,099 in 2022.

With unemployment figures on the rise, Biancalana and Cruchten expressed particular interest in the systems for getting people back into work following long-term unemployment, which were introduced in 2017 and due for evaluation in 2021. The system was designed to boost the creation of new roles within the civil service or local council jobs.

Mischo confirmed that in 2022, 133 people previously on long-term unemployment were hired by public administration bodies, representing 2.6% of all exits to employment. The majority were hired for administrative and support service activities, such as cleaning and gardening, followed by accommodation and catering, and commerce.
