Luxembourg's cultural world was in mourning this week following the passing of Armand Strainchamps.

Strainchamps' work is well-known even to those who might not be aware of it at first glance. If you have ever passed through Luxembourg City's main train station, you will have encountered the Dudelange native's murals on the ceiling in the main hall, painted to mark Luxembourg's inaugural appointment as European Capital of Culture in 1994.

However, Strainchamps did not restrict his talents to art, as he made regular contributions to the world of cinema as both a director and a producer. As well as a minor appearance as a police officer in Andy Bausch's "Troublemaker", Strainchamps also added documentary films to his repertoire, notably telling the story of his hometown in his film  "Diddeleng - 100 Joer - 100 Gesichter" ("Dudelange - 100 years - 100 faces").

Strainchamps' strong links to his home were apparent throughout his body of work, which often featured influences from the Minette region - for example, his sculptures represent the country's historical ties to the steel industry. His work was above all characterised by his use of colour, in addition to his diverse repertoire, with frequent comparison to the PopArt era. Strainchamps' personality was said to have been just as colourful as his art, if not more, and he certainly cut a vivid figure with his distinctive moustache.

Over the course of the artist's lifetime, he held over 50 exhibitions both at home and abroad, showcasing a series of artworks, sculptures, performances and films. The RTL editorial team extends its condolences to Strainchamps' family and friends.
