CSV MP for northern Luxembourg, Emile Eicher, indicated this week that he does not intend to serve his full term in the Chamber of Deputies.
The seasoned politician, who was ranked fourth on the CSV's list of candidates for the northern district in last Sunday's elections, told Nordliicht-TV that he planned to retire from parliament halfway through the next legislative period, in order to make way for new blood.
Eicher's replacement for the final two and a half years of his mandate will largely depend on whether any of his fellow MPs in the north are handed government positions in the CSV-DP coalition, currently undergoing negotiations. If both Martine Hansen and Christophe Hansen take on ministerial roles, they would be replaced by Jeff Boonen and Jean-Paul Schaaf, meaning that Rambrouch mayor Myriam Binck-Schaack would be poised to take over from Eicher in 2025, as the next-ranked candidate on the list.
Eicher, who also serves as first alderman on Clervaux council, told RTL that he planned to retire from local politics at the same time, handing over his duties to Jean-Pierre Schuller. As for Eicher's role as president of municipal union Syvicol, this will depend on the outcome of the ongoing election for the position. If he is re-elected as head of the syndicate, Eicher said he plans to serve until he steps down from Clervaux municipal council.
