The CSV and the DP are set to enter coalition talks following the CSV's decision to choose the democrats as their preferred partner for policy alignment and parliamentary strength.

Officials from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) have announced their unanimous decision to start coalition negotiations with the Democratic Party (DP). Reasons for their choice are the strength of this potential majority (35 out of 60 seats) and the policy alignment between both parties.

Luc Frieden, who earlier on Monday was appointed to form a new government, underlined that the CSV will not entertain simultaneous coalition talks with different parties. In conversation with RTL on Monday evening, he described the DP as their "first choice".

However, the CSV's national council still has to approve the decision on Tuesday afternoon.

Outgoing Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, for his part, has been tasked by the Democratic Party to lead the coalition talks with the CSV.

In a written statement, DP president Lex Delles Party Lex Delles underlines the DP's claim: "We have gained the most of all the major parties. It is the best result in over 20 years. The voters have given us a clear mandate to continue to take responsibility for our country. We will strengthen our commitment to constructive, solidarity-based and future-oriented policies for all people in the country."
