Luc Frieden of the CSV has been appointed by Grand Duke Henri to form Luxembourg's new government; the party is expected to announce its coalition partner after negotiations with potential allies, the DP and the LSAP, on Monday evening.

After Prime Minister Xavier Bettel on Monday submitted the resignation of his government to Grand Duke Henri, the State Head met with the leaders of all parties elected to the Chamber of Deputies over the course of the day. The final person to meet with the Grand Duke was the CSV's Luc Frieden, and only forty minutes after the reception, the court released a statement to announce that Frieden had been appointed to form a new government.

Facing the press outside of the Grand Ducal Palace later on, Frieden stated: "The Grand Duke has just informed me that he is putting me in charge of forming the new government. This is obviously a great honour and a great responsibility, as it involves preparing the future of this country, and I have accepted this mission ... the role of the formatter is to negotiate with the parties who are in a position to form the next government. The CSV will be part of this government, which is why I was appointed to form the government, and the CSV will decide this evening with which party it will enter into negotiations. The same applies to the possible coalition partner."

Frieden vowed to fulfil his duty over the coming weeks in serious manner, regularly informing the Grand Duke about the progress of negotiations.

At present, two parties would allow the CSV to form a new government with only one additional partner: the DP and the LSAP. The CSV is said to make their decision public on Monday evening.
