In primary schools, the rate of overweight children aged four to twelve stood at 4.77% in the 2021/2022 school year, compared to 4.62% in 2018/2019, as revealed in response to a parliamentary question posed by MP Dan Biancalana from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP).

The older the children get, the higher the risk of obesity becomes. Among secondary school students, 12% of the 11,701 pupils were identified as overweight in the 2021/2022 school year, a notable rise from the 7.48% recorded in 2019/2020.

The trend is also said to extend to adults. Data collected during the European Health Interview in 2019 reflects a continuous increase in the rate of overweight adults between 2014 and 2019, reaching 16.5% from the initial 15.6%.

The figures further revealed a higher prevalence of overweight men (18.4%) compared to women (14.6%) in Luxembourg in 2019.
