The main stand at Stade Josy Barthel has been closed to the general public following an incident where a piece of the ceiling structure collapsed. This unforeseen event has had a negative impact on athletes from the Club Sportif de Luxembourg (CSL).

The Luxembourg City Council issued a press release on Thursday, announcing the temporary closure of Stade Josy Barthel until further notice. The cause of the closure is attributed to a part of the metal structure of the main stand collapsing.

As a result, repairs to the damaged ceiling must be carried out before the stadium can be reopened.

Authorities from the local council, in collaboration with the INCA engineering firm, have already assessed the situation at the site. They assure the public that a prompt solution will be implemented to ensure the safety of both spectators and athletes.

The CSL, a prominent club with nearly 600 members, is experiencing disruptions to their training sessions due to the closure. CSL President Xavier Thillen explains that the roof of the main stand extends over the athletics track, necessitating the closure of the 50-metre zone leading up to the finish line.

While the disruption is a setback for the club, Thillen expresses particular concern regarding an upcoming significant sporting event scheduled for 15 July. The event aims to bring together over 500 children aged 9 to 15 at Stade Josy Barthel. "It would be a real shame if this event had to be cancelled," Thillen stated.
