The National Women's Council set up an information stand in the capital on Saturday to draw attention to the underrepresentation of women in local politics.
Only 16 out of 102 mayors in Luxembourg are women. Men are similarly overrepresented on municipal and aldermen councils.
The National Women's Council therefore wishes to incentivise more women to go into politics. Although many parties made sure to include female candidates in this year's elections, the Council believes that progress is not being made quickly enough.
According to the Council, it is difficult to balance family, job, and a life in politics, which is why it should be made easier for women to seek election. Spokesperson Aldina Ganeto argues that there should be an offer for child are services, for instance.
Although quotas would be a possible way of ensuring that women are equally represented, the Council believes that a general change in mindset within the population would be more advisable.
