A man has appeared before a Luxembourg court for having taking pictures under the skirts of female passers-by, an offence commonly known as 'upskirting'.
On Wednesday, a court examined a new case of voyeurism, namely that of a 34-year-old man who stands accused of having taken photos under women's skirts on at least four different days.
In Luxembourg, the phenomenon of 'upskirting' is a severely punishable offence since a first case made waves in 2017.
Arrested on 1 April 2022, the individual was caught in the act at the tram stop near the Gare central station. Shortly before 9am, two passers-by caught him pretending to tie his shoes in order to better commit his heinous crime: taking pictures under the skirt of a 24-year-old woman. The two men then forced the offender to the police station where his phone was confiscated. Officers were thus able to find photos of other victims that were taken over the course of the previous three days.
The suspect now faces a six-month suspended prison sentence as well as an obligation to undergo psychological monitoring.
His lawyer acknowledged his client's sexual frustration while simultaneously highlighting his clean criminal record and stable situation (the suspect has a job and a child). This was done in hopes of turning the sentence into community service.
Financial compensation of €250 to €500 per victim was also mentioned. The accused expressed his regrets and apologised in court.
A verdict in the case is expected on 12 May.
