On Thursday, Luxembourg reaffirmed its position towards nuclear energy in a declaration signed by energy minister Claude Turmes.
"Neither safe, durable, nor competitive" - such was the message publicised by the Luxembourg government on Thursday, while neighbours France unveiled a plan to promote nuclear energy in Europe through a new development plan.
Energy minister Claude Turmes said Luxembourg would pursue a policy opposing that of France, as the Grand Duchy had "no intention of joining this alliance".
"The construction time for the planned reactors disqualifies this technology from providing a response to the climate emergency," Turmes added.
The Grand Duchy will continue to focus on renewable energies, following Turmes' participation in a meeting on the topic in March 2023, with representatives from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia and Denmark. European countries may currently choose the energy strategy to adopt in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In April 2022, the European Parliament affirmed the "green" energy label for gas and nuclear energy in the EU.
