Figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) reveal that food prices recently experienced another significant increase.
In March, inflation rose by 0.3%. Food prices in particular experienced an increase and are considered one of the driving forces behind inflation in recent weeks. Food prices "continue their marked upward trend and gained 1.4% in monthly comparison", notes the STATEC in its latest analysis.
The following categories recorded the greatest month-over-month increase:
- fresh vegetables (+3.6%)
- pork (+3.2%)
- olive oil (+3.1%),
- fresh fruit (+2.4%).
In general, meat has remained stable (+0.70%), same as alcohol (+0.75%), and coffee and tea (+0.88%). Fish costs 1.1% more than during the previous month. Prices of pasta and couscous (-1.6%) and frozen seafood (-1.6%) fell compared to February.
Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded a year-over-year increase of 13%. The increase was "particularly pronounced for fresh vegetables (+28.5%) and butter (+27.5%)", according to the STATEC.
