The association ProVelo wants to improve the life of cyclists in Luxembourg and has therefore formulated some demands in the run-up to the municipal elections in June.

ProVelo has published 24 concrete propositions to improve gentle mobility within the different municipalities. They want to achieve this through better planning, for example in the construction of new roads and residential areas.

According to Monique Goldschmit the president of the organisation, we must anticipate the presence of pedestrians and bicycles from the very start. "How can I go to the school, the cultural centre or to the neighboring village? Where is the post office, the bank or the supermarket? This must all be taken into consideration from the start."

For the already existing neighbourhoods, the needs of the inhabitants must also be taken into consideration. The contact to the residents is of utmost importance. "I'm sure that each municipality is already thinking of its residents that use the bicycle to get around inside the village or to get to work. All of these people must be able to voice their opinions and wishes for the future of soft mobility."

To delve further into this topic a "durability test" is proposed to voters but also to the politicians who want to get involved at a local level.

An example question to ask could be: "What are the advantages of reducing road traffic in your municipality?" but the president concludes that, "while this question can certainly be asked to politicians, they should ask this themselves and already look for solutions on the ground."
