The large-scale project, which has been behind schedule for some time, has now entered a new phase that will focus on the construction of a tunnel below the area.

The Chamber of Deputies passed the law for the project in 2014 and a construction period of five years was initially planned. However, works in Ettelbruck's Gare quarter have been underway since May 2017. As it now stands, construction is expected to be completed by 2027, ten years after the start of the project.

The first law set the costs at €156.5 million. The Chamber had to rectify the costs with a second law and another €20 million due to unforeseeable challenges.

In March 2023, the site entered into a new phase. Construction is currently focusing on the tunnel that will run below the future train station. One tunnel entry will be located near the Aral petrol station, while the other side will go up to the 'Waark' car park. Here, the road is already closed to traffic.

Construction alongside the rails is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. A youth hostel with 120 beds, a new car park with 400 spots, and a bus interchange will then be built. By 2026, the underground passage is scheduled to open for traffic, beginning the restructuring on Rue Prince Henri.

According to Aral Luxembourg spokesperson Romain Hoffman, the old petrol station will remain open until the new one on the territory of Erpeldange-sur-Sûre is operational, which is expected to be in the second half of 2024.
