The Greens' Laure Huberty and the CSV's Serge Wilmes have both addressed the fatal accident in conversation with RTL, with the latter accusing the former of using the tragedy for political gains.
Following the fatal accident in Neudorf, which left three people dead on Monday morning, the Greens' Laure Huberty criticised the municipality of Luxembourg City on Twitter for failing to take action that might have prevented the accident.
"It is a matter of political will and this accident is a sad example of tolerated traffic crime", the Greens' Luxembourg City candidate tweeted on Wednesday. She further noted that the municipality is reluctant to introduce 30 km/h zones although they help improve traffic flow.
In conversation with RTL, Luxembourg City Alderman Serge Wilmes from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) showed little understanding for the criticism: "This is an unacceptable accusation for us on the aldermen council as we think such accidents should not be used for political gains. Elections might be coming up and people need to campaign, but there are limits and we think that limit has been crossed here."
Huberty has since deleted her Tweet, which she later explained as having been written in an emotional state: "Like so many other people I was really shocked about the accident, a terrible accident that happened. I once again want to express my sincerest condolences to those affected, just as I immediately did on Twitter. Due to emotions, I failed to find the right words in the second Tweet, for which I apologise."
Huberty clarified that it was not her intention to use the accident for political gains or award blame. She said the issue of transportation is close to her heart and she chose the wrong words.
The municipal elections will take place on 11 June this year.
