A petition calling for four times as many leave days for family reasons is being discussed by MPs in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday.
Leave for family reasons can be taken in the event a child is ill and no childcare options are available.
At the moment, each parent has an allowance of 12 days per four years, which the petition seeks to amend to 12 days per year. This allowance should not be limited to parents of children below the age of four, but also expanded to children up to 13 years old, the petitioner argues.
"Not everyone can depend on grandparents, family or friends. In that case, you're on your own", the petition reads. "Either you also call in sick or take days off your holiday allowance."
The petition surpassed the limit of 4,500 signatures for it to be discussed by MPs.
There are supplementary allowances for serious illness or disability, but generally speaking this is the limit. A special type of leave for family reasons was also introduced during the Covid pandemic.
In the event of a parent needing to attend to their sick child, the employee must notify their employer and provide a medical certificate. The employee continues receiving their salary.

Another petition to be debated this Wednesday calls for the automatic protection of buildings constructed prior to 1957. Taking these buildings down would become more difficult. This would protect Luxembourg's historic buildings and architecture.
