The construction site in Esch-sur-Alzette will launch on 25 February and is expected to last for 14 months.

The construction site will focus on Boulevard Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, which is located between Rue de Mondercange and Avenue de la Paix. Esch-sur-Alzette Mayor Georges Mischo provided further insights in conversation with RTL: "In light of 2035, a stop for the fast tram will be added as this will connect Esch with the capital. The construction efforts will be used to set up the entire area so that we don't have to start all over again."

Closing off the area is seen as the most efficient way to complete the works. Detours have been planned by the Bridges and Roads Authority in an effort to avoid traffic chaos in the southern city. Mayor Mischo elaborated: "We will also deploy more municipal agents and police officers to make sure that people don't use smaller paths to circumvent the area. Especially during the first days when everyone is trying to find a way around."

The official announcement of the construction site, which was only made last week, caused a certain level of outrage on social media. The local faction of the Left criticises that the public has not been kept in the loop of the project, which was already presented to the municipal council in 2021. The Left's Line Wies said: "A message was once printed in the 'Escher', a newspaper that local residents receive. But this happened in September 2021 and since then, nothing has been communicated and no open council organised."

Mayor Mischo refutes this criticism: "We had regular exchanges with the people living right across from the construction site. And we were not able to announce anything at an earlier stage as we were waiting for the authorisation from the the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development to cut down trees in the area. We were only recently granted permission."

A new flyer containing information about the construction site is set to be distributed this week.
