From March onwards, commutes for German border residents will take considerably longer. German road authorities will renovate the Moselle bridge between Wormeldange and Wincheringen starting next month. During the construction period, which will last until October/November, motorists will only be able to drive in one direction, towards Germany, on the bridge.
The bridge will also be completely closed for one weekend, which has yet to be determined. A pedestrian walkway will remain available.
According to the Ministry of Mobility, it is too complicated and dangerous to adapt the direction of travel to the traffic flow. It is also not possible to set up red lights.
The Moselle bridge was built as part of the river’s canalisation in 1964. As part of the renovation, the road will be resurfaced, the railings will be re-lacquered, and the posts will be cleaned. The Ministry of Mobility estimates the costs at €750,000, which will be entirely borne by Luxembourg.
On the German side, the official diversions will take motorists to Wellen through the federal road 419, and then to Grevenmacher via the Moselle bridge. Traffic congestion in Grevenmacher is therefore expected to increase significantly during the renovation work.
