Europe has suffered a severe outbreak of bird flu over the past 12 months, with around 50 million animals slaughtered as a result.
MPs Tess Burton and Mars Di Bartolomeo submitted a parliamentary question to assess the situation in Luxembourg. In response, Minister of Agriculture Claude Haagen explained that Luxembourg has been relatively unaffected by the epidemic, with just five geese testing positive for avian flu after an outbreak was caught in the early stages in Useldange last year.
It is thought the geese were infected by wild birds. Authorities moved quickly to isolate other creatures on the farm and prevent contact with other wild animals. The birds were subsequently kept indoors, or protected by nets if left outside.
Haagen added that any abnormal deaths of geese, ducks or swans should immediately be reported to Luxembourg’s veterinary or food administrations.
