Flu seasonViruses in circulation but our immune system lacks training

It's that time of the year again when many people are suffering from a cold or other viruses circulating the country, but this time our immune system is a little sleepy and needs 'retraining', says GP Dr David Heck.

According to the latest report from the National Health Laboratory (LNS), the RS virus (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), which causes bronchiolitis, was the most widespread in Luxembourg with a positivity rate of 38.1%.

Rhinoviruses have also increased with a 19% positivity rate, as has the flu (12.2%) or Covid which is still very present with 6.2% of all tests.

Dr Heck does specify we must take into account our somewhat sleepy immune system, which is lacking some ‘training’ following social distancing for the past two years. But it has not weakened, says the expert, it just needs time to get used to these viruses.

It is still strongly advised to wear a mask in large crowds or when in the presence of vulnerable people, wash your hands regularly and immediately throw away used handkerchiefs.

The RS virus remains very dangerous for children under the age of 2, as it can cause bronchiolitis. At the Kannerklinik (CHL pediatric clinic), the situation remains very tense, with over 253 children hospitalised since 5 December. Four were even placed in intensive care.

The RS virus is less dangerous for adults, but can still cause a severe cold.
