Due to the weeks-long drought, Luxembourgish farmers have severely struggled during this year's harvest.
Grass and maize can no longer be harvested this year, as it has dried out entirely in the last weeks. This will have a significant impact on the industry, as a shortage of animal feed is expected this coming winter. Given that the situation is similar abroad, there will not be any opportunities to buy animal feed elsewhere.
The Farmers' Alliance voices its concerns in a public announcement, which also comments on the geopolitical situation surrounding the war in Ukraine.
The international agricultural markets have been thrown off track by the Russian invasion, while our dependence on oil and gas will have consequences for several years.
In light of the drought and the war in Ukraine, the Farmers' Alliance has asked the government to convene an agricultural summit in autumn. More general questions, such as the future direction of national agriculture, are also to be discussed there.
In neighbouring France, the President of the French Vegetable Growers' Federation expects that the harvest of vegetables and fruit will be reduced by 25% to 35% this year.
