For foreigners who want to live and work in Luxembourg, the extremely high cost of living makes it difficult to settle in the country.

According to the online expat network "Internations", Luxembourg ranks 48th out of 52 as a destination for expats. Only Cyprus, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Kuwait rank lower.

71% of expats surveyed unsurprisingly marked the Grand Duchy down for the country's high cost of living, more than double the world average of 35%. 25% even gave the Grand Duchy the worst possible score.

An analysis by the European Commission, which mainly indicates that the cost of living and the cost of housing are the main concerns of those living in Luxembourg, comes to the same conclusion.

In fact, many expats described the cost of living in the Grand Duchy as "almost unbearable". Exceptions include those willing to live with others, i.e., in a shared flat, and those with a six-figure salary.

31% of respondents say that their salary is not high enough to live a comfortable life. 61% of expats living in Luxembourg, however, say they are satisfied with their financial situation. This percentage is even slightly higher than the international average.

According to the survey, the top five countries rated by expats are Spain, Portugal, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Mexico, which tops the list.
