The weekly Covid report published by the Ministry of Health confirmed 3,895 people tested positive for the virus between 13 and 19 June, compared to 2,824 the previous week.
Over 2,000 more PCR tests were performed compared to the previous week, jumping from 9,289 to 11,336 tests, in addition to the 41% increase in positive results. 52 people also tested positive using antigen tests.
Two more deaths were recorded from 13 to 19 June, aged 81 on average.
As of 19 June, Luxembourg recorded 7,039 active infections, compared to 4,991 on 12 June. The average age of newly-infected cases was 38.9 years. 248,554 people are considered "healed" as it stands.
Hospitalisations have doubled
Hospitals saw 15 new admissions on the normal Covid wards, compared to six the previous week. Two people are currently in intensive care with the virus. Patients are aged 51 on average.
The seven-day incidence rate has risen from 438 to 617 infections per 100,000 residents. The largest increase was observed among people aged 75 and over (82%), while the second most-affected age category was that of children aged 0-14 (73%). The majority of infections occurred among families, accounting for 33%, while school made up 11% of new cases.
Travel abroad accounted for 9% of new cases, followed by the workplace with 7% and leisure activities with 6%. However, 28% of new cases could not be accurately traced.
Wastewater analysis conducted at Luxembourg's 13 water treatment plants showed high incidence rates of the virus across the country.
Vaccination
74 people were vaccinated for the first time between 13 and 19 June, while 95 people received a second dose of the vaccine. 543 people received a booster, while 847 received a fourth complementary jab. As of 20 June, 1,284,554 vaccine doses had been administered in Luxembourg.
473,785 residents have now been fully vaccinated, representing 78.8% of the Grand Duchy's population aged 5 and over.
The vaccine centre at the Victor Hugo Hall in Limpertsberg will be closing temporarily from 2 July. However, the "Impfbus" mobile vaccine teams will continue to administer jabs in the week of 4 July at the Victor Hugo Hall car park, offering both the initial doses and boosters.
