It's a phenomenon that is causing concern in neighbouring countries: needles being used to inject unsuspecting victims with unknown substances in nightclubs.

Our colleagues from RTL 5 Minutes spoke to the Luxembourg police and asked them for their advice.

Although no needle attacks have been reported in Luxembourg so far, Ben Eich, head of communications for the Luxembourg police, stated on Thursday that the authorities are "aware" of the issue. The cases reported in neighbouring countries are "worrying", particularly since incidents are multiplying in border regions.

"It is possible, as always, that there are a certain number of unreported cases," Eich acknowledged. In concrete terms, this means that there could be cases that have not yet been reported to the Luxembourg authorities. In this context, the police encourage any victim of a crime to come forward.

It's important to understand that a syringe can inject a variety of substances, and that injections leave marks such as bruises, red spots, or redness. Feelings of uneasiness, hot flushes, nausea, and even behavioural issues have been recorded as side effects.

As a result, vigilance is required. In order to avoid becoming a victim of such an aggression, the Luxembourg police have shared some prevention advice with our colleagues from RTL 5 Minutes, which can also be found on their official website.

  • Avoid "sensitive areas and places where there is no-one about"

  • If you are going out alone in the evening, tell someone you trust where you are going

  • Keep your mobile phone within easy reach

  • Get bystanders to help by addressing them directly ("You in the blue coat, call the Police!")

  • Call 113 in an emergency

This is "general" advice due to the uniqueness of the situation. As the Luxembourg authorities have not yet been confronted with this type of aggression, these are, for the time being, the instructions to follow.

The police encourage any victims of aggression to report it and file a complaint. All the information and steps to follow to do so can be found here.
