An investigation has been launched in the French city of Nancy after two young adults reported being spiked by needles in nightclubs.
"On the weekend of 14 and 15 May 2022, we were informed of two separate investigations" carried out by the Nancy police station and "relating to the facts of 'injections'", public prosecutor François Perain said in a statement.
"The complainants are a young woman aged 22 and a young man aged 18," Pérain said. They claim to have been stung in the same nightclub in Nancy, the Chat Noir, on the nights of 13 and 14 May.
"A trace of an injection in the arm was noted on a medical level for one of the two victims," he said, while indicating that "the results of toxicological analyses are not yet known."
In a separate statement released on Monday, the Meurthe-et-Moselle prefecture and the regional health agency (ARS) of the Grand Est region called for "vigilance" after these two complaints, assuring that "emergency forces are fully aware of and mobilised to fight against this phenomenon".
"In the event of a sting or suspected sting, the prefecture and the ARS invite people to file a complaint and to go to the nearest emergency room for toxicological tests."
A wave of unexplained stings has affected nightclubs, bars and festivals across the country in recent months, with complaints filed in several cities, from Lille to Béziers and from Lorient to Grenoble, including Lyon, Besançon and Valence.
It follows a number of similar incidents which caused serious concern in the UK in the autumn of 2021.
