On Monday, a Chamber commission will discuss a draft law that would abolish the minimum residence period and allow more foreign residents to vote in local elections.
Numerous residents were unable to vote in the last municipal elections due to the five-year-residence clause needed to be eligible. MPs are set to discuss the matter on Monday and look into a draft law that would abolish the waiting period.
According to government statistics, "33% of foreign residents were unable to vote in the 2017 municipal elections for not having lived in Luxembourg long enough." The change would affect 75,226 residents.
A government evaluation thus concludes that it would be in the best interest "of local democracy and civic engagement" to abolish the clause. It would further allow the Grand Duchy to align with EU directives, as it is the only country to apply the outdated clause.
The next municipal elections will take place on 11 June 2023.
