Recent cases of Escherichia coli contamination are linked to certain Buitoni pizzas, French health authorities say. The pizzas were also sold in Luxembourg.
There is a link between Buitoni pizzas (Nestlé) and some recent cases of Escherichia coli contamination in French children, France's health authorities announced on Wednesday, recalling the need to destroy the products concerned.
Analyses "have confirmed a link between several cases and the consumption of frozen pizzas from the Fraîch'UP range of the Buitoni brand contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria," the French government's Directorate General for Health said in a statement.
As a reminder, Luxembourg is one of the countries concerned by the massive recall of these products, which began on 18 March. Products from the 'Fraîch'UP' range were distributed in the Grand Duchy.
According to the Luxembourg health authorities, 6,318 "sales units" have been targeted by this recall procedure. They specify that "the entire Fraîch'UP range (Quattro Formaggi, Bolognese, Royale…) of Buitoni is concerned in Luxembourg".
The Ministry of Health has launched "tracing work" while the Food Safety Authority has published an alert on its website, specifying the batches and barcodes of the products that should absolutely not be consumed.
The Government Food Safety Commissioner's Office warns that Escherichia coli can cause food poisoning which can occur within a week of consumption. This can result in gastrointestinal upset "often accompanied by cramping".
