Luxembourg's Prime Minister had another phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday to ask for "de-escalation" and "the adoption of a ceasefire" in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine has been raging for more than three weeks and despite financial sanctions and international pressure, Vladimir Putin is continuing his so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Luxembourg's Ministry of State said in a statement that the Prime Minister had asked the Russian leader for "de-escalation and the adoption of a ceasefire" in Ukraine.

"I am deeply shocked by the attacks on civilian installations. The images that reach us are intolerable," he was quoted as saying, adding, "this tragedy must be stopped, and this ongoing attack on Ukraine must be stopped immediately. No one gains from these clashes; not Russia, not Europe, and certainly not Ukraine."

According to the Ministry of State, Putin "expressed his appreciation of the subject and the sequence that could lead to a ceasefire". The exchanges were "frank" and both parties committed themselves to continue the exchanges.

The Luxembourgish Prime Minister will brief the Ukrainian President in the course of the afternoon.
