She will assume her new position on 1 April, thus becoming the successor of Robert Schmit. Schmit served as director since 2004 and will retire.

Following a proposal by the Ministry of the Environment, the State Council decided during its meeting on 25 February to suggest the nomination of Joëlle Welfring as the new director of the Environment Agency to the Grand Duke.
 
Welfring has served as deputy director of the Environment Agency since 2014 and has a master's degree in environmental science. Between 2010 and 2014, Welfring was the director of the 'Business development' domain at the Henri Tudor Public Research Centre.
