The petitioner requesting a referendum on constitutional reform, Gérard Koneczny, is also one of eight people who have launched the collection of signatures supporting a referendum through a so-called “Comité d’initiative” (initiatives committee).
25,000 signatures will need to be amassed between 19 November and 20 December, with voters required to visit their local municipal building in order to sign. As required by law, the Ministry of State has published details regarding the planned amendments to the Constitution, as well as the names of the 8 people forming the committee, who submitted their application on 26 October.
Four of the eight hail from Christnach and are members of the same family. According to the Lëtzebuerger Land paper, which has examined the profiles of the committee members, they are ADR supporters, as well as allegedly anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists.
A quick look at their social media profiles shows that among the initiators are a young man from Esch-sur-Alzette, who along with campaigning for constitutional reform, is also an active participant in the silent white marches, protesting against coronavirus restrictions. Also on the committee are two mothers who opted to homeschool their children following the introduction of masks at schools earlier this year. The request for a referendum was initiated by a philologist from the capital.
The public petition, which runs until Monday on the website of the Chamber of Deputies, had been signed by 17,402 people as of Friday morning. The CSV has announced it will go out of its way to request a referendum for up to 16 MPs if the petition receives at least 25,000 signatures.
