During a board meeting on Monday, the union proposed a number of changes to improve the status of local politicians.

First, Syvicol demands that local politicians receive better protection from being let go, as is already the case in many of our neighbouring countries. In Luxembourg, protection only comes into effect once a person is elected, but not while they run for election. And even after a mandate has ended, Syvicol president Emile Eicher argued, that support should still be active for a couple of months.

Another point of criticism is the low amount of political leave, which Syvicol believes should be increased. The rate no longer aligns with the  work load, especially in small and medium-sized municipalities, Eicher emphasised.
