According to a study released on Tuesday by the pharmaceutical company, the Moderna vaccine is effective on adolescents 12 years and up.
Moderna intends to request an emergency approval from the FDA in the US on the basis of the study. Once approved, the vaccine could be used on adolescents from July.
Asked about Luxembourg's position at the EU summit, Xavier Bettel explained that this was entirely dependent on approval by the EMA, as well as having access to the vaccine. At this point it isn't clear if the composition will be exactly the same as the vaccine injected to adults. Once all these conditions were fulfilled, vaccinations could begin.
A number of open questions remain. He added:
"It is important to understand that the virus may focus on those who are unvaccinated. And we can't tell an entire generation, well, that'll be you. Even young people can have heavy cases. Plus, with the rights granted by the vaccination certificates, we can't exclude an entire generation from that."
But any open questions must be resolved before being able to proceed.
