Members of Echternach council met with Minister of Culture Sam Tanson on Thursday to discuss plans for the archaeological discovery.

A committee will be set up with members from both sides to decide how to proceed with the findings and to propose a revised project for the “Petite Marquise” site, where the medieval building remains were discovered.

The group will also seek to maximise Echternach's importance as a cultural heritage site in light of the discovery related to Saint Willibrord. Remains of 7th century buildings were discovered at a construction site for a former hotel-restaurant at the town's marketplace.

The building work was stopped immediately as a result.

Due to the exceptional nature of the excavation, the Minister of Culture referred the matter to the Commission for National Sites and Monuments (Cosimo) in order to analyse the classification of the archaeological remains as a national monument.

The committee will be made up of representatives from Echternach council, the government, and experts in archaeology, culture, sites and monuments, as well as representatives from the public buildings and housing sector.
