As of January 2021, the traditional Luxembourg City market has moved to Place Émile Hamilius, where it now surrounds the former post building on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is expected to trade from this location for a two-to-three year period.
Marketeers were forced to abandon Place Guillaume II due to construction work. The market offers a selection of local and regional products, which range from fruit and vegetables to flowers and freshly roasted chickens.
Weekly markets flourish especially in the south of the Grand Duchy. In Dudelange, a market takes place every Thursday morning at “Forge du Sud”, which is located adjacent to the local town hall.
Similarly, both weekly and monthly markets are organised in Esch-sur-Alzette, Kayl, and Differdange. Most of them have managed to adapt well to the pandemic.
There are between 40 and 50 professional marketeers in Luxembourg, who currently worry about the shortage of future prospects in the business.
During a general assembly, representatives of the sector concluded that very few people intend to become marketeers, especially given that they are known to have long working days.
