Young people in foster homesRestrictions are still a burden, says director of Solina Foundation

The director of the Solina Foundation was a guest on RTL Radio on Friday morning.

The foundation takes care of children and adolescents living in foster homes. Its director, Michèle Kridel, explained in an interview on RTL Radio on Friday morning that these children are “of course” also suffering under the effects of the pandemic.

Some of these young people experience anxiety, feel isolated, or are disillusioned, Kridel stated. However, there are also others who have already been through a lot and developed a certain “can-do” attitude thanks to their experiences. Their optimism can sometimes inspire those around them.

The pandemic also makes vocational training or summer jobs either difficult or outright impossible, a situation which sparks additional anxiety about the future, according to Kridel.

Around 780 children and adolescents live in foster homes in Luxembourg. Most of them come from very difficult homes where they have been neglected by their parents. They were either placed in the foster homes by order of the juvenile court or came on their own accord.

However, the main goal is always to allow the children to return to their homes, which is why cooperation with their respective parents is at the centre of the Solina Foundation’s work.
