The country has seen a dramatic decline of its hotels over the past 25 years, said the LSAP MP Francine Closener, during an expanded parliamentary question.

Over 70% of hotels and camping grounds would have to find a new owner over the next few years. There is also a worry that even after the pandemic, many conferences and conventions will remain digital and this type of tourism will disappear.

In his response to the question, the Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Lex Delles, summarised the financial aids given to the sector, notably the direct aids via accommodation vouchers. Over 100,000 of these vouchers have been used up until today, bringing in over 5.35 million Euros for the sector.

In terms of a five year plan, aiming to support the sector with over 60 million Euros between 2018 and 2022, 30 million Euros have already been assigned to a variety of projects. 37% of these funds went to municipalities, 20% to syndicates and associations, and 17% to the hospitality sector, said the minister.

A national touristic application is expected to be presented before the summer.
